The Chiltern Film Society… Lights, camera and action!

How long has the Chiltern Film Society been established?

Chiltern Film Society is excited to be celebrating its 50th season from September 2018 to May 2019 with another great 15 films

How did you decide to set up in Chesham?

Originally called the Amersham & Chesham Film Society, we began way back in 1969, showing films at the White Hill Centre. We now work with the Elgiva theatre where our selected films are shown on Wednesday evenings. When we started, Harold Wilson was Prime Minister, George Lazenby was 007 and Neil Armstrong was taking a few tentative steps. Since then, of course, much has changed: From our perspective, the movies have gone from 16mm film to today’s digitally downloaded formats.

What would surprise your customers to know about you / your company?

We have shown over 650 films – everything from silent comedy to sci-fi blockbuster. These films are nominated by our members and selected as having outstanding merit and interest with the aim of providing a local showcase for world cinema and therefore represent a range of genres and nationalities.  We are a not-for-profit society and we are independently run by our members.

What is the best thing about being based in Chesham?

We love Chesham! We have a great collaboration with the Elgiva who really understand what we are about and provide the fantastic venue and support through their staff and expertise. They are even offering our members discounts to other events they put on outside of the film society. Our selected films are shown on Wednesday evenings from September to May.

Our members come from a variety of backgrounds and we have a growing number of “London expats” from the creative industries who are keen to see the diverse films on offer here to get their fix of culture!

Most of our growing membership live in and around Chesham and Amersham, but many also travel in from other parts of Bucks and Herts to experience films on the big screen they may not otherwise have the chance of viewing. We compile members’ comments and calculate ratings for each film following each screening which we publish online and at the next film, which always makes for interesting reading and informs our selection process!

New developments for this month?

An exciting development is that membership to CFS also gives reduced entry to other films and events organised by the Elgiva. Our last film of this season will be Isle of Dogs by Wes Anderson on Wednesday 8th May at 8pm, preceded by our AGM at 7pm where all are welcome!
