Lets Be Cats – Chesham being creative as always!

For this blog we are exploring Chesham’s creative side, we meet Liz Turner from Lets Be Cats, she creates quirky creations from upcycling and makes beautiful things….we ask her…..

  • How long have you been in Chesham?

We moved to Chesham just over 21 years ago, moving from Harrow which many in Chesham seem to have done! Must be something to do with moving along the Met Line!

  • How did you decide to set up in Chesham?

Our eldest child was nearly one and we wanted to move further out into the countryside yet still be near to family – Chesham seemed to fit the bill. It was with my eldest child Alex that I began Lets Be Cats jewellery as a way for him to earn some money. We made alternative and upcycled jewellery between and sold them in Chesham’s Street Market. So many people made jewellery, it made sense for ours to be different and quirky. Over the years we have diverged as I have concentrated on using recycled materials in my work and Alex is currently at Uni studying Textiles. I work from home and sell both online and at events around the area. I use a variety of upcycled materials – maps, playing cards, haberdashery, books, computer parts and much more.

  • What would surprise your customers to know about you / your company?

Despite being called Lets Be Cats jewellery I don’t actually own any cats, or have much in the way of cat-themed jewellery either! The name evolved after a brainstorming session involving bats, goth and cats! I can’t change the name now though as people recognise it. What would surprise people about me? I am involved in the costume side of one of Chesham’s amateur dramatics groups and have occasionally in the past trod the stage, most notably as the Duck in Peter and the Wolf.

  • What is the best thing about being based in Chesham?

It’s a move we’ve never regretted as it is such a friendly town full of community spirit. It’s small enough to know lots of people, yet not too small so they know what you had for breakfast! We are lucky to have small independent shops and businesses who are supportive in helping each other – long may that continue. It is also a very artistic and creative community which in turn encourages people to have a go.

  • New developments for this month?

It’s been a very busy few months for me as I have been selling in the Craft Coop pop up shop in High Wycombe since October as well as at pre-Christmas selling events. Later this year I will be taking part in Bucks Art Weeks for the first time. On various dates between June 8-23 I will be exhibiting as ‘3 On The Hill’ teaming up with Alex Vincent Textiles (my eldest son) and Julia Batten Glass in Julia’s studio. It’s all very exciting and a great opportunity to show off our diverse and creative work to a wide range of people during June.  For more information on this venture email 3onthehillarts@gmail.com and find us on Facebook and Instagram: @3onthehillarts where updates will be posted in due course
